I have worked in the Mental Health field for 20 plus years and focus on people who are going through transitions in their lives and those who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, abuse, grief and loss, attachment issues, chronic pain and relationship problems. Some people come to therapy during times of disconnection from their self, their story, their body, their families or their community. Being human can be complicated, challenging and messy. I believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative process where together we can explore new ways of understanding your experience as well as gaining insight into self-defeating patterns causing distress and the necessary tools to grow beyond your current struggles.
My therapeutic lens is person centered, strengths based and humanistic. I provide a safe place for you to investigate fully who you are and how to live your best life. You are the architect and author of your life and I serve as a guide and support. Using a compassionate lens, I use a psychodynamic approach, family systems, CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, EMDR, attachment theories and a toolbox of other techniques to assist in mining each individual's unique gifts.
Additionally, I am committed to providing advocacy to assist parents of children with special needs in obtaining the appropriate supports, services and educational placement through the IEP process. I also advocate for differently-abled adults and chronically mentally ill adults and believe they have the right to receive services that meet their unique needs, supports and encourages their strengths, and embraces their individuality in the least restrictive environment.

She is a very good listener and has the ability to create space for me to work out stuff. I have a tendency to talk things through instead of think things and she understands that.

I have really enjoyed having Shoshona as my therapist. I like that she listens to me when I am talking things out, and provides some very good insight and suggestions for some of the matters I am facing and some of the things that I can do to help myself through them. I never feel like she is just directing orders at me and telling me what to do, and that she helps me acknowledge that my feelings are valid. I feel like she helps me and provides homework in ways that are unique to my issues and how I process things, even shares some of her own experiences. I also appreciate that she makes the effort to remind me of things I've discovered and realized, and my progress, when I am having a backslide and seem like I might be too lost in how I'm feeling for them to occur to me on their own. In short, I appreciate her insight and listening to me. I feel like she really cares, and that is the most I could ask for.

Written on Jan 15, 2022 after therapy with Shoshona for 2 months on issues concerning stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues
Shoshana met me where I was at as I navigated the transition following a move. She helped me to understand that my brain was processing changes in sensory stimulation, changes in my routines, grief of leaving a home that I had been very emotionally invested in as an artist. She helped me to process and release childhood trauma from a move that had taken place when I was a in the 5th grade. I feel more solid in the reality of moving during a pandemic, more resourceful within myself and better able to communicate my emotions and needs with my partner who now works from home full time. Its been significant change for both of us. She was also quite empathetic to my need to discuss the changing dynamic of my role as a Mother to two young adults who are now thriving their first jobs and no longer live at home. And the regret from the daughter side of wishing that I could have been more support to my Mom when she, too, moved through the transition in her role of Mom to four of us. On-line therapy is not an ideal situation in my experience yet Shoshana provided a safe, reliable space in which I could progress, release stories that did not serve and return to a more hopeful, uplifted state of feeling more centered in myself.

I would highly recommend Shoshona Barbara Stokes if you want a compassionate, honest, knowledgeable, and always present counselor. I started working with her shortly after my father passed and other family issues arrived. Five months later, although I am still grieving, due to her her guidance through this process, I have become stronger. I will always be ever so grateful to her. You will feel like you have known her forever from day one.

After every session, the advice and support she had given me helped me in improving my mental health. Overall, I would highly recommend Shoshona to anyone that is in search of a therapist that is both professional and friendly.

I worked with Shoshona over several sessions around depression and anxiety. She offered me new perspectives and tools to work with in order to change my relationship with anxiety and intrusive thoughts. I still have lots to learn, but I would never have known about intrusive thoughts without Shoshona's help. I am extremely grateful for the work we have done together. If you experience unwanted intrusive thoughts or let your thoughts spin around and around in your head or have negative relentless thoughts, give Shoshona a try.
