About me

My name is Lori Vaughn and I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker in South Carolina. I have 10+ years of experience in counseling. I've worked in various settings as well as with a wide variety of populations from all socioeconomic back grounds. My experience and knowledge includes working with those dealing with severe mental illness (schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, PTSD, generalized anxiety, depression, anger management, OCD, bipolar, grief and loss) as well as with the LGBT community, families, individuals, and couples. I've also been trained in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Over the years I've worked in a homeless shelter, hospital, hospice, HIV/AIDS service organization, and an outpatient mental health clinic.

With regards to providing therapy for individuals within the LGBT community: I think it's important that they have a place to be themselves, explore their identity, and work on any issues that they are struggling with, without fear of judgement. Being in a same-sex relationship for the past 15 years and married for 3, I understand the struggles that same-sex partners encounter in their everyday lives. I want my clients to know that I can sympathize and empathize with what they are going through and that I'm here to help them get through it.

My counseling style is tailored to the individual's needs. I believe it is important for a therapist to meet the client where they are....and not where the therapist thinks they should be! I find that utilizing cognitive behavioral, experiential, solution-focused and family-systems therapy can be beneficial to many clients. I believe being non-judgemental, empathetic, caring and honest are important elements in establishing and maintaining a trusting relationship between the therapist and the client.

It can be hard to ask for help. But doing so is the first step in healing and resolving whatever issues have brought you here. I believe everyone has a story and this is a chapter. I would be honored to hear your story and assist you in "writing" a new "chapter" of your life! I look forward to working with you...
