Jeffrey A. Craven has been a counseling expert for nearly a three decades; providing counseling services for a variety of mental health-related conditions. Currently, he is a practitioner at BetterHelp.com and is contributing to the expansion and growth of a free online mental health resource with BetterHelp.com/advice. Jeff's main interests in counseling are in the areas of trauma, anxiety, and depression, however, he has many years of experience working as a generalist in Community Mental Health settings.
As a doctoral student in clinical psychology and blogger, Jeffrey has covered topics related to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), trauma, clergy abuse, anxiety, and depression. However, he admits that working with clients in the counseling office is his first passion.
Jeff considers himself a life-long learner, a passion that was handed down to him by his mother (d. 1999) who was an educator and college counselor herself. Jeff's path into the field of counseling was influenced by his mother when he took a vocational battery that she had administered. "I couldn't see myself quite as happy doing anything else." Currently, Jeff is Program Manager at a local hospital's behavioral health outpatient department, owner at Optimum Counseling Services, West Chester, OH, an online counselor at BetterHelp, and a doctoral student at California Southern University completing his dissertation.
Before becoming a counselor, business owner, and doctoral student, Jeff worked as a web developer and technical consultant in the Market Research industry. After several years of working in the dot.com industry, he decided to get back to his first love, helping others and raising a family. Jeff and his wife of 32 years, Karen, have two sons that are now raised and out of the home. His seventeen-year-old daughter is on her way to college next year. Jeff is also passionate about passing along his years of experience to others through his writing.
Jeffrey A. Craven graduated from the University of Evansville in Evansville, IN with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He holds a Master of Arts Degree from Amberton University, Garland, TX in Counseling and is currently a doctoral student at California Southern University studying Clinical Psychology.
"My Philosophy on Mental Health & Wellness"
Wellness is more than just the absence of disease or illness. Being well involves active engagement in a meaningful activity that brings purpose to life and making choices that support wellness. It is as unique to every individual as a fingerprint, yet it is also as dynamic as the wind. If wellness is ever going to take hold in the client's I work with, then my own wellness must come first. They must see wellness in me before they can see it in themselves. My hope is to be an influence on others' wellness through my counseling and writing, but mostly with my life.
