Therapy can be an effective way to get support for mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it can also be helpful for anyone who needs support or wants to make a meaningful change in their life.

Who are the BetterHelp therapists?

All BetterHelp providers—which include licensed professional therapists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists—must have the following qualifications:

  • Be licensed to practice in their state as a marriage and family therapist, mental health counselor, clinical social worker, psychologist, or professional counselor, or hold a similar license based on their location
  • Have a relevant master's degree in the mental health field
  • Have at least three years of experience and 1,000 clinical hours working with clients
  • Meet all licensing and qualification requirements for the state(s) where they offer services

Is online therapy more affordable than in-person therapy?

Online therapy can be more affordable than traditional in-person therapy. For example, for non-insured users, BetterHelp uses a subscription pricing model, which costs somewhere between $70 to $100 per week, billed either monthly or weekly, which can be an affordable option compared to paying out-of-pocket for treatment.

BetterHelp is currently working with select insurance carriers to join their networks, and some providers on BetterHelp may be considered in-network with certain insurance plans. To determine whether your therapist is an in-network provider, check the BetterHelp website.

Please note that the exact costs of therapy are determined by several factors, including location, referral source, preferences, applicable discounts, and therapist availability. Any discounts on therapy costs are only available to non-insured users.

What can I expect at my first therapy session?

In your first therapy session, your therapist will take the time to get to know you, your unique challenges, and why you are seeking therapy. They may also discuss their professional experience, qualifications, and education with you as well as what to expect in future therapy sessions. Research suggests that stronger relationships between therapists and clients can lead to better outcomes, so your first therapy session will likely focus on laying the foundation for this relationship.
