It never fails. You think you have gotten over something and then you see something or someone that reminds you and you are right back where you started. How can you let it go and get over it? It may be something that happened weeks, months, or even years ago, but all of a sudden, it seems like you are right back there again. You want to let it go and you really believe that you have. The problem is, you really have not let it go.

What Does Let It Go Mean?

Of course, it is almost impossible to completely forget things that have happened to you. Especially the bad things. They really seem to stick with you forever and no matter what you do, that memory just keeps popping back into your head when you least expect it. Well, think about it this way. Be realistic. You do not have to completely forget things, just let them go. Meaning, stop worrying about it. Do not continue to go over and over it in your head because you cannot change the past. Nobody can.

Give Yourself Time

No matter what it is you are trying to let go of, you have to give yourself time. You cannot just say "okay, that is over and I am not going to think about that anymore." It just does not work that way. For example, say your boyfriend cheated on you with your best friend. You want to forget both of them and pretend it did not happen. But, you know you cannot do that. You have to give yourself time to heal and the time you need is different for everyone. It may take you a month or it may take a year but eventually you have to let it go and get over it.

How Do I Heal?

One of the best ways to heal is to think about the situation from a different point of view. Now, you cannot do that right away. But, after a few weeks of being angry, sad, lonely, and all kinds of other feelings, you have to realize that you cannot do anything about what happened and it is over. You cannot change anything that happened so you have to move on and let it go.

Sometimes you just need to talk to someone. Maybe you feel like your friends are not trustworthy enough to listen to what you have to say, or you just need to talk to someone who is unbiased. You could talk to a psychologist or therapist. They are trained to help you find ways to let go of those feelings that are dragging you down.
