About me

Hi,
I am Dr. Allyson "Ally" Matt. Before telling you about myself, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the significant step you are taking to seek out mental health services. For many people taking this step is very difficult and anxiety provoking so thank you for having the strength and courage to reach out. I sincerely hope that you find the therapist who will be the best fit for you.
Now, I will tell you a bit about me. I am a licensed psychologist in the state of North Carolina, and I received my Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Purdue University, which is in Indiana in 2011. I worked in the university counseling setting for approximately 5 years following graduation, but I have since left that setting and opened my own private practice in the Wilmington, NC area. I love the beach so when I decided to open my practice, my family and I made the choice to move to the coast.
My therapy style tends to be very warm and relational. I believe in building a genuine person-to-person connection with my clients because I I view trust as a key component to the therapeutic process. I often incorporate techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based interventions as they are warranted. I recognize that I will never know as much about you as you know about yourself. My goal is to be a guide, objective third party, or neutral person to offer a new perspective or new strategies for coping with life circumstances. I have expertise working with concerns including depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship concerns, trauma/posttraumatic stress disorder, etc. I also have considerable experience working with individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
On a more personal note, I am married, and we have two very spoiled dogs that are a huge part of our family. We are also foster parents, and we currently have two foster children living with us. I am a very avid reader, and when I have time, I enjoy putting together complex LEGO models. I am currently working on London's Tower Bridge.
It would be a privilege to come alongside you on your journey.

I loved talking to Dr. Matt, she was very open to letting me talk about what I needed to. She responded very quickly every time I messaged which was super surprising.
