Hello and welcome! I am happy to see that you have taken the first steps towards healing. What you are doing takes a lot of courage and curiosity, and I can’t wait to help you explore the inner workings of you. Until I get to know you, I would love to share a little about myself to make sure we are a good fit!
I received my undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Oswego in Wellness Management and Psychology in 2012. I have always been interested in how wellness can be incorporated in all aspects of life including social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual, and physical wellbeing. Through my studies in college, I discovered mindfulness meditation and my life has since been changed for the better. I have found that practicing mindfulness (non-judgmental awareness of the present moment) has also changed my client's life and increases their ability to live in the moment.
I received my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in trauma treatment and cultural competency in 2015. My love for mindfulness translated into an interest in the physiology of anxiety and trauma and how it affects the nervous system. I have since gotten certifications in Reiki, Yoga (Registered 200Hr Yoga Teacher), EFT “Tapping” and Somatic Experiencing. I believe once we can tap into our bodies and understand what they are telling us, change becomes much more intuitive and natural. I have gained my experience from working in a variety of settings such as school based counseling working with “at risk” middle school and high school students, community based counseling, and substance abuse addiction treatment centers. I have worked in the outpatient, inpatient, and community based setting helping client’s address a wide range of presenting problems such as anxiety, depression, anger management, trauma and abuse, communication issues, and family/partner relational issues along with more chronic issues such as addiction, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.
I would consider myself to be a short-term, goal oriented therapist mainly utilizing evidenced-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through a mindfulness lens. I am always adapting my practice to fit the needs of the client and I pride myself in being able to create a non-judgmental space for my clients to explore who they are, what they like about themselves, and what they would like to change. I am a great listener and love to get to know my clients at their own pace and in their own time. We are all doing the best we can at any given moment with the tools we have. With that said, I would love to help you grow your toolbox so you can go out and conquer the world as the best version of yourself!

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Alyssa Van Boxmeer. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
Alyssa is incredible. She is extremely insightful and gives me an entirely new perspective. She not only listens, but when she talks she helps me process things in an entirely new light. I could write a novel on how much I truly enjoy my sessions with her, and how quick she is to respond when I’m struggling or at a crossroad. Literally life changing and couldn’t have been paired with someone better.

Her ability to understand my issues is wonderful. Our sessions are a good balance of talking and listening.

I’ve only had 2 sessions and I already feel so much less anxious. I am more mindful of my bodies needs and take more breaks when needed which I’ve learned through tools from Alyssa
