Amanda Cannella

About Me

I am a clinical social worker and clinical alcohol and drug counselor. I have 7 years of experience working in behavioral health and developing goal-oriented treatment plans based on client's individualized needs and preferences. Currently, I am the Senior Primary Therapist at a dually licensed mental health and substance use disorders facility in New Jersey.

During my time as a student, I worked with adolescents in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. I was a research assistant for a project focusing on race and immigration and I began fulfilling my desire to work in the field of substance abuse and addictions. I was involved in programming and development to increase recovery support centers in collegiate environments, and was involved in federal initiatives to decrease barriers for young people seeking treatment.

My clinical interests include: recovery and addiction, co-occurring mental health disorders, young adults in transitional settings, identity and role confusion, trauma, coping skills, self-esteem, anger management, crisis intervention, job attainment, relationship issues, spirituality, trauma-informed yoga, yoga for addictions, and group and family therapy.

I describe myself as a mindfulness based therapist who looks at relational and adaptive patterns. I practice from strength–based approaches and include lifespan development, attachment theory, Cognitive Behavioral approaches, trauma-informed therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I believe therapy, empowering families and additional support systems lead to optimal outcomes. I support both harm reduction and 12-step models for recovery.

During my free time, I enjoy soaking in fresh air and sunshine, trying new restaurants, attending concerts and sporting events, exploring new places, exercising, fishing and being creative.
