About me

Hello,

I have been working as a therapist since 2011. Most of my experience has been working with college students ranging anywhere from 17 years old to older non traditional students in their 40's or 50's. I have also worked in the Texas prison system providing mental health services to prisoners. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminal justice in 2007, a Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology in 2011, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2018. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern in 2011 and began working towards my hours. I became fully licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2013. The beginning of my career after obtaining a Clinical Psychology degree was in the criminal justice system. I have worked in a university counseling center since 2013. I also became a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor in 2015. My current work involves providing mental health services to students and supervising interns as well as staff. I also provide supervision to less experienced therapists outside of the university. In addition, I teach on a part-time basis as needed. I have worked here privately online for a little over one year and have provided counseling services to variety of people with various backgrounds.

I use a variety of treatment approaches but mostly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is focused on how thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are connected and how if we change one then the others will be affected. I am also like Solution-focused Therapy approaches and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy approaches. I have had some formal training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and have used it with clients as well. I use variety of approaches though, depending on what is called for and what I and the client determine might be best for them.

Dr Perez, is one of the best therapist I have come across on my journey doing therapy . I like his method of making me think about how I can be more gentle and caring about myself despite what is going on in my life. This is a tool I have taken from his experience and I have applied it to my life and it works, I have learned from him to first experience compassion for my self . It works for me and I have now an insight into how to be kind and loving to my self . I would recommend his approach to therapy any day and to anybody .

Dr. Perez is a great listener. He didn't try to access me off top but rather listened to me during a time when I was really stressed. His style is more like natural conversation and that's nice seeing that he is a professional. He's down to earth and will let you know how he relates to a situation or topic and then gives advice on just enjoying the simple things and appreciating yourself through the day to day grind and that's helped me a lot.
