Hi! My name is Arlene. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and National Board Certified Counselor (NCC) with over seven years of experience in substance abuse and mental health counseling. I graduated from La Salle University in Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, I remained at my internship site where I continued providing individual, couples, and group counseling to clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Working with this population, I discovered some underlying commonalities: childhood trauma/abuse, mental health issues, impulsivity, relationship problems, and/or emotional dysregulation. This insight led me to develop and grow as a clinician. I sought to find interventions which best served my clients' needs.
Although I draw from various modalities, I primarily utilize Dialectical BehaviorTherapy (DBT) and trauma-informed treatment. DBT is an evidence-based practice which has proven to be very successful not only during treatment but for a lifetime. The skills are easy to learn and applicable across every day situations. So what's the catch? You will have homework! Don't worry, though. It's easy. :-) All you have to do is practice, practice, practice.
My approach to treatment is one of collaboration. I believe that each of us knows what we want and need. We just need a little help now and then seeing the forest for the trees. Therapy isn't about me giving you the answers, rather, it is working as a team to problem solve to get your needs met. As with any relationship, I believe honesty is a necessary component in building a solid foundation. I will always be upfront with you even if that means saying things you may not want to hear. I would ask that you feel comfortable doing the same with me. The more open and honest you are, the better equipped I will be to give you the best that I have to offer. I welcome feedback, both positive and negative. This is your journey. I am your travel companion.
I look forward to working with you! I'd like to share one of my favorite quotes: "Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away." My goal for you is that you will have many breathtaking moments in your future!
