Bet Malarkey

About Me

To my prospective clients...
I look forward to working with you and it is my personal mission as a counselor to see to it that you are much better when we finish your therapy with me than when I first met you and listened to you. It is my belief that we all have the capacity to feel better when we feel supported, listened to, have our pain and grief validated, develop insights and self-awareness about our situation and learn coping skills and mechanisms so we can do the process of healing. If you have depression, stress and anxiety, are grieving the loss of a loved one, break-up, and divorce or loss of ability, capacity or coping with feelings of failure, there is hope that you will somehow heal from all these. If you suffer from lack of self-esteem, motivation, confidence, self-control, or belief in your own abilities, know that you can be better at this. Not doing anything to get help for yourself can affect not only your mental and emotional well-being but also your physical well-being. You do not have to suffer by yourself -- seek out someone who can help you find your way to feel better. If you worry about your feeling safe and trusting someone you do not know, seeing a therapist like myself is a good first step as we are here not to judge but to help. Everything we talk about is confidential. You owe it to yourself to take care of yourself and it is my desire to support you in this process. We will start where you are, and work on the issues that matter most to you.

I have been a therapist for over 5 years, I have worked with individuals, couples and groups. and have a private practice in Newport Beach, California. I am a person-centered therapist, and use different modalities of therapy (cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based, dialectical-behavioral, psychodynamic) that suits best your specific issues and personality My professional qualifications include a Masters in Counseling Psychology as well as a Masters in Communications. I am a mother of 3 grown up children, and come from a large family from whom I have learned a lot about life and relationships. I have worked professionally as a communicator, a writer, a trainer and a teacher but doing therapy is work that is closest to my heart. I look forward to working with you.

Bet is really good at her job!

I've been talking with Bet for a couple of months, and she has been a real Godsend for me. She keeps me on track, doing the mental work I need to do to overcome stressful thoughts. She is so knowledgeable and always has something interesting to add, whether it's a technique or a personal story, and it always supports what I'm going through on my journey. Often times I find myself repeating fun little quips she's introduced throughout the day to help me cope with stress or anxiety. I feel more balanced and emotionally lighter since beginning our counseling. She has helped tremendously and I would highly recommend her counseling for anyone dealing with anxiety or emotional distress. Thank you, Bet!

Bet got me thru one of they most difficult times in my marriage. It was nice talking to her made me feel like I’m just talking to my Aunt. Very calm and very respectful and insightful. She doesn’t waste time with small talk- just straight to the point but it doesn’t feel like she’s rushing. Thank you, Bet!

Bet Malarkey is attentive, and remembers what I've told her. She offers real compassion with expertise for her work. She cares a lot, has a big heart and offers many different tools if you'd like, with more improved ways of moving through challenges. I feel heard, respected and honored working with Bet Malarkey.

Bet is a wonderful therapist, really one of a kind. She is extremely gentle and understanding, gives actionable advice, and treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. I feel safe with her as my therapist, and know that because she listens so well, and asks the right questions, she will guide me to solving my issues once and for all.
