How can I cope with feeling depressed, overwhelmed and anxiety before traveling abroad?

I've been having relationship issues with my husband for many years. We are on different paths & have few common interests, although we usually travel well together.

Good evening,

It can be difficult when faced with challenges in our closest relationships. It sounds that despite the many differences in interests and different paths you two have found travel as a way to connect and come together.

There are various ways to cope with symptoms of depression, feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. It will be important to work on identifying what may be causing these feelings to come to the surface. Have there been times when you felt like you were able to address those feelings and if so what was different in those situations? Can you incorporate some of those techniques into your routine leading up to the travel abroad? Also can you have some of those routines during your travel?

For some, finding a time to practice meditation, yoga, breathing and setting intentions help. For others it can be getting activity into their daily routine. For some journaling or finding a creative outlet allows for processing and re-focusing time. Having some grounding activities that you can incorporate now and take with you during your travel can also be helpful. Some things to consider are deep breathing, mindful exercises, deep breathing exercises, guided meditations there are also fidget toys that you can carry with you.

It can also be helpful to focus on your thoughts: what are you worried about? What evidence/facts do you have that reinforces your worry? What is the actual outcome of the scenario that you have in your mind?

Self care routines can also go a long way in helping to reduce anxiety, depression and feelings of overwhelm. Focusing on the positives that are happening around you and to you. As well as talking with your network (those you trust) to share some of the difficulties you are experiencing as a way to have a sounding board. Additionally, considering talk therapy may also be a source of support to facilitate your process in identifying your triggers and working through your feelings of depression, anxiety and overwhelm.

Remember that you are doing the best you can! We can often be our own harshest critics. Be gentle with yourself as you navigate this time.
