How can I heal from depression/anxiety/self-esteem?
I'm sorry to hear that have experienced negative thoughts and feelings growing up to the point where you have adapted to them which is now affecting you into your adult years. It's good that you are now seeking help to lead a more positive and happy life, I would like to reassure you that this is quite common and it is possible to turn this around.
Negative thoughts and low self esteem may begin in childhood, our environments and our main caregivers growing up provides us with both positive and negative messages about ourselves. As children we often cling onto the negative messages and carry them with us into adulthood which can have an overall impact on how we view ourselves.
It's important to try to identify the negative beliefs you have and then challenge them. Write these down and ask yourself where does this come from and when did you first start to think like this. Next start to challenge these thoughts and identify positive things or qualities about yourself. Also write down any positive feedback you have received from other people like family or work colleagues. You can then start to develop a new way of seeing yourself. Aim to have at least five positive things on your list and add to it on a regular basis, you will then see and watch your positive list grow.
Others ways to help with Self esteem
Be kind to yourself - Do not be too harsh on yourself, be gentle and and speak positively about yourself and to yourself. Identify activities that you enjoy and try to incorporate them into your day.
Give yourself a challenge - Try new things, set yourself goals, these can be small goals. Achieving goals will increase your self esteem and will make you feel good about yourself.
Reward your efforts - When you achieve a goal, recognize it and celebrate your success. Always remember to celebrate your small successes as well your big ones.
Write or journal to express your feelings - Expressing your feelings and thoughts in writing can help, as you are able to release them without bottling them up. It can also help you keep track each day and identify the causes.
I do hope the above suggestions help, seeking therapy and talking through your emotions and exploring where these negative thought processes my stem from will also help. Having a therapist walking beside you along this journey can be very comforting.
I wish you well on your journey through life.
