How do I get over letting the little things get to me? How do I stop stress and the aniexty ?

On a regular basis a little things and the big things stress me out, give me anxiety to the point where my body physically hurts. I’m totally against the use of medication and I want to be able to resolve this and stop this from happening.

Hello,

First of all, I'm so sorry you are experiencing these emotions. I can understand how experiencing stress and anxiety can turn into experiencing physical pain. Anxiety is the body's natural survival response in situations we perceive are threatening. The issue arise when we perceive nonthreatening situations as a threat, avoid potentially threatening situations, or use ineffective strategies to cope versus finding a solution. Problem-solving helps us brainstorm and objectively evaluate each possible solution before implementing one. By breaking down problems, we can replace avoidance or other unproductive behaviors with healthier ways of coping.

You could try several techniques to help you define the problem.

  • For example: reflect on the who, what, when, where, and why of a specific problem. Identify important issues. See the problem for various perspectives. Be sure to separate your beliefs and assumptions from the situation.
  • Second, brainstorm and assess possible solutions. Here you would explore the strengths and weaknesses. Think about whether each solution is a short or long term solution, how it will impact others, and whether it aligns with your values and goals. Try this steps: 1. Three possible solutions 2. What are their advantages? 3. What are the benefits 4. Which is the best solution. The third step would be implementing the solution. To increase the likelihood and success of the chosen solution, develop a plan of implementation that circumvents avoidance behaviors. Break down complex solutions into small steps. Consider any barriers or skills needed. The fourth and final step of this exercise is review your outcomes. What worked? What did not work? What would you change.

This is really a short activity you can try and see if it helps you deal with your anxiety. Of course, I do not mean to minimize or say that this take all of your anxiety away as I would think there are several layers to explore, but I do think this can help you. Thank you for submitting this question. I hope it can help you and that you are are ably to give it a try. I hope you feel better soon.

Best regards,
