How do I stop overthinking and being less anxious?
Thank you for your question. I know a lot of people struggling with anxiety and overthinking. I hope this response will assist you in coping with and alleviating some of if not all of the symptoms associated with anxiety and getting stuck in your head.
One way to stop overthinking and being less anxious is by challenging your thoughts. This can be done by breaking down what are fears, feelings, and facts. Your feelings are valid and are there to let you know that something is out of balance. They are what guided you to therapy so that you can continue to learn what the feelings are telling you and develop coping skills and tools that will assist you in coping with those feelings and stressors. However, feelings are not facts. I think starting with the feelings and addressing the facts will assist in stopping the overthinking.
The next step would be to start working on your self confidence and highlighting your strengths as well as learning how to love and trust yourself. This will also assist you in discerning what thoughts are fears and what thoughts are facts.
You can start this by setting aside time for self reflection. Journaling or writing a letter to yourself is especially helpful with unpacking thoughts, feelings, and emotions as well as chipping away at blocked feelings and emotions and identifying triggers to overthinking. Then going back and reading over what you wrote to identify the root cause.
Other methods include meditation, exercise or even taking a nice walk. This can help in changing the channel to fears and releasing doubts. It can also provide a way for you to shift your perspective from what could go wrong to what could go right.
Overall, remember that no one is perfect and fear is natural. What is important is progression, self reflection, and balance. Too much of anything is not good. Taking one day at a time, one moment at a time is important in tackling each problem, concern, or fear as it comes. Then releasing them and letting them go so you are no longer holding on or attaching yourself to them.
