What can I do first to feel comfortable with getting help?
Sounds like your brain and body are in survival mode and constantly telling you that danger is near. Anxiety is a naturally occurring thing in people's lives and most people experience some level of anxiety. Anxiety can sometimes be a good thing where it tells your body to act in a way that keeps you safe or motivates a person to take risks that can have a great outcome like new jobs, having a baby, getting married and even meeting new people.
Sounds like you have developed some thinking that prevents you from trusting people. When did this start? What are your thoughts telling you about people and the reasons not to trust? Sometimes when a person was not kept safe as a child they develop constant fight or flight response, which could be the uncomfortable feelings you have. You could challenge those thoughts by asking yourself "what evidence do I have to support that I cannot trust these people," "have they done anything to me or is this a thought that is coming from my past," and/or "am I safe". Chances are in most situations you might find that you are safe and those around you have not given you reason to mistrust. Perhaps recognizing where this thought is coming from and confronting that.
When you say you are about to lose it, how do you know? What are your body and mind doing, what do your thoughts sound like, and how is your body responding? Is it telling you to run, do you freeze in place and shut down, or do you become defensive and angry? These are danger responses. I wonder how to you cope once you have been triggered and are about to lose it? Are you able to walk to a quiet space and breath slow deep breathes, are you able to go to a bathroom and splash cold water on your hands, neck and face, can you remind yourself "I am safe," "I am not in danger," "allow myself to feel and let it pass". Sometimes reminding your brain that it is safe can help the feelings pass. I am wondering if in these moments your brain is "tricking" you and recognizing there is no threat would be helpful.
Talk with your therapist about the feelings and thoughts connection in order to find ways to cope.
