What can I do to improve my general anxiety?
Aloha and thank you for this question. I am sorry to hear about the anxiety that is happening. I know that can be distracting from our daily goals for sure. There could be many explanations for what you are experiencing but I will write some general info here that may help sort things out a bit.
As a student, you likely have assignments and class requirements of your time and that can be demanding if our time is not balanced. It will be important to have a structured schedule to have time set aside for school and homework so that you don't get overwhelmed with more demands than you have time to commit to them.
Also, it is important to start or continue a wellness routine with similar structure. This would include having relatively set times for meals, exercise, relaxation techniques, making sure you get enough sleep at similar sleep/wake times, avoiding caffeine close to bed time and so on. Although physical in nature, these items have a big impact on our emotional wellness and can impact our entire daily experiences if they are not balanced and cause mood fluctuations on their own.
As far as what sounds like some social anxiety, it will be helpful for you to reflect on what you might be thinking that causes these emotions of anxiety. It seems like you may think you don't belong to a group. I would encourage you to think about why you have that opinion. Sometimes we have misinterpreted and can clarify by simply having a discussion with someone to see if our opinion was accurate or not. Sometimes it is a simple misunderstanding that can be cleared up fairly quickly.
Also, it is acceptable that you do not necessarily relate well to some other people. There are many people in the world, each one unique in their own way, and it is perfectly reasonable that sometimes we will not have the same interest as someone else, and that's okay.
Sometimes, we have been through hard times that makes us generally afraid to trust and feel the need to defend ourselves. This is sometimes called hypervigilance. It will be helpful for you to think about any possible life experiences that may have given you an impression that it is not safe to trust others.
I am sorry to hear it did not help much the last time you attended therapy. It is within your power to change therapists if needed to find the fit that works for you so please don't hesitate to try again until you find the fit that resonates with you.
Good job being willing to reach out here and I wish you the best as you navigate this.
