What does it mean to feel racing intrusive thoughts out of no where?

There are days where I am lying down, and just have these thoughts of what may happen tomorrow or convincing thoughts to do things. Not voices. I usually play background noise to help and it only happens before I go to bed. I am stuck thinking about it for a couple of days and questioning myself as to why it happens every so often.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Betterhelp. I am so glad that you came to seek some guidance.  My hope here is to answer your question to the best of my ability and hopefully provide so clarity to your question.

It sounds like you are having thoughts that perhaps you are overthinking and they are becoming irrational or intrusive as you have indicated. However, a lot of times when we have intrusive thoughts that come out of no where it is usually triggered by stress or anxiety.  I am not sure if there is something that is causing you stress or anxiety as you have not indicated that.  While these thoughts come to your mind or into your head it is normal to feel very uneasy.

While these are common there are different strategies that you can use them to hopefully manage them.  It sounds from what you have written it appears that it happens at night while you are laying down.

I think the first thing you need to do is find out if there is any underlying stress or anxiety that is causing the intrusive thoughts. You need to identify what they are, is the thoughts unusual or bothersome to the point you can not fall asleep.  I would also ask your self if these thoughts or intrusive ideas are hard to control. Can you distract yourself?

Once you identify the thought as intrusive, you have to accept it and try to work with it and what is causing it.  I would suggest seeking a therapist if these intrusive thoughts are starting to affect your daily life.  I would also suggest looking at your pattern before laying down. Is there anything that you are doing or reading that could be causing these. Sometimes before laying down, doing certain things can have these thoughts arise.  Maybe trying to change your patterns to see if that helps would be something to consider.  I also would  highly suggest looking at if you having any underlying anxiety or stress that perhaps are causing these too. Once you find out it may be good to touch base with a therapist.
