What resources are available for help with maladaptive daydreaming?
Hello and thank you so much for reaching out. Specifically on this part of the platform, I give you an answer to an initial question. This part of the platform is never meant to be a substitute for individual therapy. That being said, I really encourage you to look into your own individual weekly therapy sessions. It would allow you the possibility to really process your feelings and get the personal attention which you deserve.
I hear you say that your daydream is getting in the way of your every day life. I would really encourage you to think about how this began to become a habit for you. I am wondering if perhaps it is a way in which to avoid particular responsibilities. Please understand, never am I calling you irresponsible or lazy. Rather, I wonder if it is used as a way to escape from things that perhaps feel overwhelming or less interesting.
You might find it valuable to try blocking time. For instance, this includes making a list of priorities, or things that you need to get done, or things that you want to do. Next, you would choose an amount of time. This could be five minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes; the amount of time really does not matter to begin with. You then take that time to complete a task. The goal is for you to feel an accomplishment. If you try doing this daily or three times per week, just notice how it makes you feel.
I really encourage you to look into mindfulness skills. This pertains to being present in the moment. Often times, it involves using the senses. There are many different ways to do this.
Again, I wish you the best on your journey. Thank you so much for allowing me to answer your initial question.
Take good care of yourself.
