Where to study mindfulness?
Mindfulness has steadily increased in popularity over the years since its first major introduction to the United States in the 1970s. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program began at the University of Massachusetts during that time period and continues today. Due to its success at helping alleviate depression and anxiety and providing relief to those struggling with trauma and even chronic physical illness, more and more people began to show interest.
After scientists began to study its effectiveness, doctors, mental health counselors, and more began recommending the practice to their patients. The research support for mindfulness grows each year. In recent years brain imaging studies revealed that the brain itself experiences changes that are thought to be beneficial to supporting healing from trauma, anxiety, and chronic stress.
Today, thanks to its popularity, mindfulness instruction is available in a wide array of mediums. Online courses that are both free and paid are increasingly available. Apps are available on multiple platforms at various prices, making it possible for anyone to begin a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness “coaching” has also begun to develop, and both online and in major cities, it’s possible to find a person trained in the practice to help you develop your own efforts at mindfulness. Many yoga studios also offer mindfulness classes.
The best place to study mindfulness depends on your preferred method of study. Books, podcasts, and videos abound and are free to access through the internet and local libraries. If you prefer video instruction to print or audio-only formats, signing up for a self-paced mindfulness course may be a better way to go. If you prefer the more individualized approach, working with a mindfulness coach in person or online may be more beneficial.
Many therapists have received training in mindfulness as well. Interventions in therapy have expanded to include mindfulness, such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy or M-CBT. If you want to address a specific issue related to mental health, working with a therapist trained in mindfulness may be the most beneficial route.
The multiple avenues and inexpensive options for mindfulness make it an accessible option for most people.
