Are happiness and satisfaction the same thing?
Happiness and satisfaction are not inherently the same thing. Happiness is oftentimes described as being a feeling or an emotion. Because it is an emotion, it can be fleeting or temporary and natural and voluntary or involuntary. Satisfaction is a state of being often referring to when all of someone’s wants or needs have been met. Satisfaction is more long-term focused and is based on how a person views their overall current experience. It is a lot less fleeting than happiness. Because it is more of a state of a being, satisfaction is also less involuntary in how it happens. Satisfaction has a lot to do with achieving certain goals and obtaining the things that someone desires out of life. Because of this, satisfaction is very much rooted in a person’s ability to reach these ends and, although circumstances can get in the way, it is more flexible and individually defined by the person pursuing it.
These two concepts are often related, but it is possible that one can exist without the other. A person can experience happiness but not necessarily be in a state of satisfaction. For example, someone having a birthday could be filled with happiness when considering the gifts they receive and the loved ones they celebrate with but not necessarily be satisfied with the state of their life. Maybe they did not receive exactly what they wanted for their birthday. Maybe life circumstances interfere with their ability to obtain something that they want and, as soon as the party is over, they will go back to focusing on their desires in this area.
The reverse can also be true where someone experiences satisfaction but has difficulty accessing or experiencing happiness. For example, if someone struggles with Depression, they might have everything that they could ever want. But, at the end of the day, they do not experience happiness related to this state of satisfaction because of their continued struggle with the chemical imbalances that Depression causes. So, happiness and satisfaction, at their core, are not the same thing. However, they can interact with one another, especially if someone’s happiness is dependent on their ability to fulfill their wants and needs and reach a state of satisfaction.
