Can depression cause physical pain?
Pain is a symptom of depression that we may not discuss often enough. Not only is pain a symptom of depression, but pain can also contribute to depression. Back and headache pain can be symptoms of depression. This pain can cause fatigue, exhaustion, and feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, each of which is other symptoms of depression.
Those with chronic pain conditions, injuries, or other sources of pain are more prone to depression. If multiple problems contribute to pain, each one may need to be addressed to experience relief. Depression that results or contributes to pain may need to be addressed alongside any medical conditions causing pain.
Symptoms of depression can include:
- Feeling tired, lacking energy
- Difficulty with tasks due to fatigue
- Sleep difficulties like sleeping too much or not enough
- Feelings of anxiety or nervousness
- Moving or speaking more slowly than normal
- Feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or hopelessness
- Guilt
- Thoughts of death or suicide
- Physical pain like back or headaches
If you’re experiencing thoughts of suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or visit your local emergency room.
For those coping with pain and depression, antidepressant medications are often used to treat pain and depression. Therapy is often recommended in support of pain management and coping for depression. Some forms of therapy like mindfulness-based stress reduction or MBSR have been utilized successfully with pain management. Stress reduction practices like exercise, getting adequate sleep, meditation, and journaling are often recommended. Pain management and rehabilitation programs are also available.
Depression is a serious condition that should be diagnosed and treated promptly to avoid worsening symptoms. Medical conditions that may result in pain may be urgent and should be evaluated by your medical provider to rule out serious conditions.
If you’re experiencing depression and physical pain symptoms, or you believe your pain is contributing to depression, contact your doctor or a licensed mental health counselor. Your doctor is likely to perform a physical examination to determine any medical issues contributing and may recommend medication to treat depression or pain. Depression is often addressed with both medication and therapy.
