Is it normal not to feel any emotions?
Good day, this is a very good question in regards to how you process emotions overall and how you are affected by stressors around you. Occasionally we may become sad of course due to certain things in the environment or at times our mood just might naturally decline from one week to the next. However, if these feelings of sadness or depression continue for over two weeks, it is important to evaluate our symptoms and look into them further and see if there is a deeper reason as to what needs to be treated. In this case, it sounds like that things that normally would call for your demand or things of concern, for example taking exams, are being affected overall. Especially that these are final exams and that there is a certain expectation and investment that has been put in it and you are noticing that you naturally are lessening worry about this, this may be signs that you are feeling depressed overall. Additionally, you are describing that you are isolating friends and want to keep to yourself and not do a lot for yourself.
Additionally, when you are feeling an overwhelming amount of emotions and there are several stressors involved, it is common to feel that it can be a lot of emotions at once. And results of this, especially if this is happening over a period of time, it is common to feel numbness. From what you were describing it seems that this is what you are experiencing. This happens when your brain and body are telling you that you are under too much stress and you need to take time away in order to recollect yourself. It can seem scary sometimes because it is not usual, but also in a way it is good because you are getting a sign that you need to take a break emotionally or at least in order to recollect to confront overall demands.
Firstly, it is important to ask yourself, when did the symptoms start? When did you start to feel this way? Have you ever experienced these emotions in your lifetime or can relate to another time in which this was similar? Additionally, depression and numbness can be the result of unresolved stressors from even beforehand and it might not be affecting you until now when other stressors come in to play like responsibilities. Do you feel that there is anything unresolved from before that is hitting you more now?
You also mentioned how this affects you when you go out as well that you find that you are not experiencing anything joyful or happy. This may happen also with the numbness that you are not able to enjoy things the way you normally would be. It does not mean that this is forever but that your mind isn't letting you enjoy it the way you normally would. It means that you need to lessen the amount of stress in someway. This can be either by lessening responsibilities and demands or reaching out for support where you normally wouldn't ask. Additionally, if there are ways to relieve stress such as taking breaks or talking to a friend about what is going on for you, it is important that you exercise these tools in order to know what is most effective. Also, another tip and being able to enjoy activities that normally are exciting for you is to try to find a way to give enough time to transition between breaks and responsibilities, for example, if you are going to school or working it is important for you to give yourself a bit of time to decompress before going out and doing something fun or going away on a trip.
Another idea that could be influencing the depression/numbness is motivation. If for some reason it is difficult for you to envision your future or finding purpose in the tasks you are currently completing, it is difficult to stay motivated when stress becomes overwhelming. For example, if you are learning a particular subject it is good to research where you can look for jobs or the types of positions that you were able to complete in order to feel more inspired to finish your work or to see the relevance/value of the information you were studying. If you are having difficulty imagining yourself within that position, it is important for you to remind yourself of your strengths and your abilities in order to work towards these tasks. When you have had some rest, it is important for you to remember what you are capable of and what you are able to overcome in order to feel more motivated to complete the tasks which are at hand.
Lastly, if you do find yourself always looking towards trying to watch shows that are more humorous, this may be a sign that your brain needs a break from reality or situations that are emotionally draining. Usually, when you look toward shows that are humorous, it helps to remember the good side of life and ways to find enjoyment and that not everything is about the demands of work. Additionally, it can help relieve thought processes away from more serious and complicated realities in life. To answer your overall question, yes it is very normal to go through the feelings that you were having in response to the stressors. However, it is important that you try to take steps in order to relieve these feelings of numbness and try to reconnect with the world in the best way you know how. Even if activities that usually help you to feel enjoyment are not at the moment it is important to still give them a chance and try again or try something different that might stimulate you in a positive way. Additionally in general it is important for the mind to have different stimuli as well and be introduced to an environment that is new because your psyche is always looking for more to explore and learn about. It is important to continue to nurture the mind as well. Good luck in your journey!
