What can I do to not feel like everything is out of my control?
The fact that you have this awareness and insight into the warning signs that you are experiencing is great progress in gaining skills. This is very supportive to being able to make positive changes to not repeat past patterns.
When we are distressed we can distract ourselves as a coping skill but this is only helpful for the short term and ultimately we have to either problem solve or accept what is causing us distress. By working more than focusing on yourself, being at home or resting it is working as a distraction skill.
Routine, mindfulness and grounding skills can help take back a healthy level of control. It is important to keep a routine that supports your well-being in all domains of your life. Even when you do not feel like eating making sure that you get the nutrition that you need, supplementing vitamins and protein shakes if you are not able to eat 3 good meals a day. Try to set time to be home, get chores and daily tasks done there and set a sleep schedule. It is also important to make sure you are getting social time in with family and friends, this can also support keeping things in perspective.
Mindfulness is a great tool for increasing awareness and staying present. What is mindfulness? "Mindfulness is bringing your attention to the present moment with an element of non-judgment and acceptance. It is noticing when we get caught up in thoughts about the past or the future, and returning our attention to the present - the only reality. While mindfulness can be a formal meditation practice, there are also informal ways to practice this skill. This can give us perspective and decrease stress. In moments where we feel out of control, grounding skills can bring us back to the moment by allowing us to employ our 5 senses to stay present. To do this, we would pick one of our senses and attune into it as a way to bring out focus in. Another way to keep control is to make plans and set goals for ourself, each of these allow us to determine steps and measure progress which reinforces our control in the situation.
