Will therapy make a difference in my life?
Hi, good question!
I am a big believer in therapy and not just because I'm a counselor. I have seen therapy do wonders for people struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, and other symptoms and issues. I think that if you put effort into really working on yourself in therapy that you will start to see changes. Your therapist can help to educate you about your symptoms, they can help you to identify goals, they can also teach you techniques to help reduce symptoms.
Often, just having someone unbiased to talk to is a big help for people. It's good to vent and allow yourself to feel, which is part of what you do in therapy. Your therapist can help you to understand that your emotions are valid. They can also help you to identify triggers and to identify coping skills that will help you to deal triggers. The more consistent you are with using the coping skills you are taught, the more progress you will see.
It's important to take care of your mental health, because mental health and physical health are connected. Improving your mental health can also help you to improve your physical health. So, you might see positive changes to your physical health as well after starting therapy.
You could see positive changes in relationships, and in your work or school life. You may find yourself learning to be more assertive or learning to set healthy boundaries that will reduce stress. There are a variety of things that you can learn in therapy.
I think it's important to remember that therapy is not just for people who are dealing with severe symptoms. Therapy can be beneficial to anyone. We all have things that we need to work on, and by participating in therapy we can address them and hopefully improve ourselves.
Again, the amount of progress you make will have a lot to do with the amount of effort you put into treatment. If you are using your coping skills, being honest with your therapist, and attending sessions on a consistent basis then it's more likely that you will see progress quickly.
