Life is full of changes, challenging experiences, loss, and triumph, each of which can create stress or lead to feeling overwhelmed. For some, mental health struggles are an issue, or communication with loved ones or colleagues becomes difficult. The list of things counseling can be helpful with is endless.

Seeking the help of a mental health professional like a therapist (also called a ‘counselor’) may seem like something to do only in mental health issues like clinical depression, anxiety, or other ‘diagnosable’ problems. While counselors work with clinical mental health issues, they are also helpful with more.

Counseling is a joint effort between the counselor and their client, wherein clients identify goals, potential solutions to problems and work to improve communication and coping skills. Self-esteem, behavior changes, and overall mental health are improved. Communication, thinking, mindset, a sense of self-efficacy and self-worth, and family or relationship problems can contribute to ongoing challenges. Counseling can help you take an active role in changing, cultivating, and growing to feel your best.

Counseling can take multiple forms, including:

  • Individual counseling, where you meet one on one with a counselor
  • Couples counseling, where you and your partner will meet with a counselor
  • Family counseling, where a family attends counseling together
  • Group counseling, where a group of people with similar issues to address may meet

In individual counseling, you have an opportunity to work on any number of issues like communication, anger, depression, substance use, marriage or relationship issues, parenting, challenges in school or work, career decisions, and more. Couples' counseling aims to help improve levels of closeness and can address issues like arguing stagnation or even aggression. Family counseling offers the opportunity for a family to identify strengths and challenges and addresses things like family roles, support within the family, the challenge of changing roles within the family, or changes that impact the family’s system. Group counseling may have about 8 participants and focuses on a shared issue like anger management, people going through the challenges of divorce brings recovery from substance use, and more.

Counseling can help you:

  • Identify patterns in relationships that have become problematic and help you identify ways to change them.
  • Highlight learned thoughts and behaviors that cause problems or keep them going.
  • Find solutions to life’s challenges.
  • Identify communication issues that may be contributing to problems and make corrections.
  • Identify and cultivate your personal strengths to be used in new ways
  • Regain a sense of control in life

Counseling can be a powerful and positive life-changing experience that helps you improve your relationships, communication and reach goals that you may have thought impossible.
