Behavior change is important due to the prominent role behavior plays in our lives. Our behavior forms the basis for our habits; habits allow us to be successful in life. For instance, if you are a student at a college, you need to develop good study habits to be successful. If your behavior is dedicated to having a good time (e.g., partying all the time) and not developing good study habits, you will not be a college student for very long.

However, human behavior is very malleable. It can be changed. If you are a poor student, you can change your academic behavior and turn yourself from a poor student into a competent one. It may not be easy, but changing bad habits will always be a good investment of your time and energy.

Another reason why behavior change is important is control. You directly control your behavior versus other parts of yourself, such as your emotions or thoughts. You may not always have much control over what you think or feel, but you can always choose your actions. If you want to feel better about yourself, the only way to help with this is by changing your behavior.

Throughout our lives, we all change as we grow and develop. So when we mature due to collecting experiences, our behavior should change to reflect our newfound wisdom. It is hard to grow as a human being if our behavior remains the same throughout our lifespan. For instance, it may be appropriate for a child to eat a lot of candy, but such food is not healthy for older adults. As adults, we should have the ability to recognize that this behavior is detrimental to our health.

Finally, if you find changing your behavior difficult and want help, contact a cognitive-behavioral therapist. These are mental health professionals who are trained in helping people modify their behavior and build better habits. Cognitive-behavioral therapists use various tools to help people change their behavior by assisting people in confronting poor thinking patterns and tackling self-confidence issues.
