Psychotherapy can be practiced by a variety of individuals who possess a master’s or doctoral degree within the field of mental health, from social workers to marriage and family therapists to mental health counselors to psychologists. Within the field of psychology, as with other fields containing specialties and counseling, psychology happens to be one of those specialties that are just as helpful to clients as others. Counseling psychologists have a different focus from clinical psychologists because counseling psychologists tend to work with individuals with less severe circumstances than in a clinical setting.

Counseling psychologists focus their efforts on the lifespan of clients and how their issues affected them through time. Counseling psychologists also explore interactions between the environment, the individual, education, and at times, their career. This is important as it takes an all-encompassing approach to understand and to assist the individual. Counseling psychology is important in assisting individuals in regaining emotional and mental comfort by strongly considering their cultural beliefs, environmental influences such as our gender, sexuality, and diverse differences interact with society, in identifying how, multiple perspectives influence the complete individual. Specifically, counseling psychology offers an approach that is not so much problem-focused but rather considerate of an individual's needs, wants, and strengths and developing a path towards fulfilling preferred outcomes.

Counseling psychology is also beneficial because it provides supervision and training in a variety of settings. This is important in that using evidence-based psychological approaches increases the probability of understanding, effectiveness, and elevated success rates of specific outcomes. Alongside supervision and training, counseling psychology in the career realm is instrumental for individuals to explore their strengths and limitations further and have specific plans to develop internally, thereby increasing overall career satisfaction. Although counseling psychology takes a less clinical approach, that does not mean counseling psychologists capable of providing in-depth counseling, implement crisis intervention techniques, conduct assessments, and provide psychological to assist in diagnosing a mental health disorder. Counseling psychology also serves an important function in researching necessary health topics for further understanding.
