Will bullying ever go away?
Bullying has been around for years, and it, unfortunately, may continue to be around for many years to come. Due to the fact that most bullies tend to have inadequate relationships his or their parent and or guardian, bullies also tend to lack parental supervision, and they also tend to be targets of traditional bullying more so than individuals who are not bullies. It is unlikely that bullying will ever go away, but I believe that with research and proactive measures, bullying can be decreased and or managed. Preventative measures can be used if the bullying is based in a school system. The preventative measures can include but are not limited to the following actions that can be used accomplished by a school counselor to prevent traditional bullying and or cyberbully in the school. A school counselor can do the following: conduct a needs assessment to assess the presence of traditional bullying and or cyberbullying, parents can be trained in recognizing signs and symptoms of a student dealing with traditional bullying and or cyberbullying, teachers and or support staff can also be trained to recognize signs and symptoms of a student dealing with traditional bullying and or cyberbullying, students should also receive supervised training on the appropriate use of the internet, and support groups should be established for students who have been victims of traditional bullying and or cyberbullying.
The support group for victims of traditional bullying and cyberbullying can be effective if it focuses on making sure the victims receive cognitive skills to help them process their thoughts and feelings in a safe and conducive environment. The cognitive skills can be processed and assessed through counseling, increased supervision, and various community support groups that actively help individuals who have experienced traditional bullying and/or cyberbullying. Bullying may never necessarily go away. However, it will be very important for parents, teachers, and or community officials to work very hard to ensure that individuals who actively engage in traditional and/or cyberbullying are held accountable for their actions. Once more people get involved and proactive about decreasing traditional bullying and or cyberbullying, the number of cases can decrease, but I do not see it ever fully going away due to the history of bullying being ignored for so long.
