The ending of your marriage can be excruciating. You have lived a couple's life for as long as you remember, and now your life is starting over as a single. The end of a marriage is a loss, so you will probably experience the five stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. When your marriage is over, the best thing to do is to take the steps toward rebuilding your life as a single person.

GRIEVE

Again, the end of a marriage can feel like losing a loved one to death. This loss can be severely painful and sad. Allow yourself to grieve your loss and experience all the stages of grief so that you can heal. It will take time before you are ready to face the world without any pain or sadness, and that is alright. It is recommended that you do not make any life-altering decisions during this time. Listen to your heart, body, and mind, and give yourself the time needed to heal, grow, let go and move on.

FORGIVE YOURSELF

Many people become angry with themselves when a marriage ends. It does take two to make a marriage work, and you may feel like you failed once the marriage is over. Sometimes it is in both party's best interests for the marriage to end, and it is not either party’s fault. However, if it is your fault or partially your fault, you have to forgive yourself. We all make mistakes and decisions we wish we could take back. This is all part of life; however, it is crucial to learn from your mistakes and move forward. Forgiveness is for you, to give you peace of mind, body, and soul.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Through all these changes and transitions, it is easy to stop taking care of yourself. You are in survival mode, so you are doing the bare minimum to get through the day. Even though there are days it isn't easy to concentrate or even think straight, you still have to take care of yourself. You have to eat right, get plenty of sleep, keep your body active, and maintain your responsibilities the best you can. Self-care is also important, meaning doing things you enjoy and relax you, such as a spa day, enjoying a movie, reading a book, spending time with friends, and so much more.

LET GO

It may take time, but eventually, you have to let go. Let go of the hurt, anger, sadness, and marriage. Allowing yourself to let go sets you up to start a new. You deserve to create a new life.
