What Is Grief Counseling

We can experience grief when we experience a loss. While grief may be most often associated with the passing of a loved one, grief counseling can be effective for grief arising from other situations, such as a divorce or breakup, a loss of a job or career, the loss of possessions that were of great importance to us, etc. Grief counseling does not take the approach that grief because it can be painful is a feeling that should be avoided; rather, grief counselors generally believe that grieving is beneficial but that some people need help with it.

Grief counseling can involve different approaches to addressing grief. Still, it often allows the client to process their feelings in a safe setting with a clinician who specializes in grief counseling. There is often psychoeducation in grief counseling, helping the client learn about the stages of grief and strategies to cope with grief. Grief counselors can help clients to examine their experiences with loss and what they learned from those experiences. Clients can evaluate what they tell themselves about the loss and change the way they think. Grief counseling is also sometimes offered in a group setting. Many clients find great value in participating in grief counseling.

When Grief Counseling Can Help

Grief counseling can be beneficial for those experiencing significant grief. Some people may feel that they should move on quickly, giving them unreasonable expectations regarding their grief. There is no normal time for a person’s grief to subside, and there is no normal way to cope with grief. However, coping with grief effectively often involves the need to express our feelings, and when this is difficult for us, grief counseling can provide an opportunity to do so.
