I feel like I do not have a purpose. I see everyone with high goals and aspirations..I have none.

I feel like I am stagnant and do not know what I am doing on a day to day basis. I know life has a lot to offer but I do know how to be a part of it. I want to be this big shot who has their life together but honestly…I don’t think that is possible. I am in debt as a college graduate, my credit score is declining, my time is occupied by either work or meaningless relationships. I feel lost and empty. Like I want to give something to this world but I don’t know what exactly. I am 23 years old right now and I have no ambition. I don’t know how to make the necessary steps to even explore my purpose

Hi Erin,

First I wanted to let you know that you are absolutely not alone in these feelings! Sometimes it can be challenging when we feel like we are in a rut, and our society and social media doesn't help when we are constantly being bombarded with seeing people seemingly "having it all". I would say that most, if not all, people go through times in their lives when they are questioning purpose or aren't really sure what they want to do.

You mentioned that you are struggling with feeling like you are being weighed down by some of the negative things, like your debt, credit score, feeling like you don't have enough time and energy to engage in this work, but those are just small barriers!

One place to start is by thinking about what sorts of things do you care about? Are you someone who loves spending time with family or friends? Or maybe someone who wants to be career focused? Or even wanting to better your community. Once you are able to identify things that you care about, and your values, that can help guide you in trying to figure out where you feel that spending your time and energy is going to pay off. If you are able to make goals, even small ones, that align with your values. For example, if you are someone that wants to start bettering your community, maybe starting to volunteer, or finding job opportunities that align with bettering your community. Everyone's values are different, but those who have true happiness are often aligned in where their values lie and how they spend their time. It's often when those two things mismatch that we start to feel like "what is the point?".

Sometimes people have a hard time identifying some of their values or things that they care about, and that is ok! You can ask those around you what they see in you as far as your values and positive traits, this can help inspire us as well. Connecting with a therapist can also be helpful in order to work through some mental road blocks and to start identifying changes that you can make to become the best version of yourself!
