I feel trapped in life

I hate where I live and my job and I am not happy with how I look, nothing seems to be going my way. I have tried finding a job in another state but nothing after a year is working out. Once student loans start again I will have no money. I just don't see anything changing and have been having trouble moving forward.

Thank you very much for reaching out. Creating change can be a very daunting task because although you may have the desire for things to be different, developing a plan and putting it into action takes energy, optimism, and clarity of thought. However, these are extremely hard to come by when you are feeling stuck. Dissatisfaction with your job, your home, and your appearance must be overwhelming because it impacts every moment of your day. So even if you are making progress in a certain area, you may not even notice it because the other negative experiences cancel it out.

Motivation can be tricky because there are many factors involved. A good first step is to try and figure out if your motivation is intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is more driven by the enjoyment of the act itself. Do you want to move out of state because it satisfies your desire to experience new things? Do you enjoy working out because it releases endorphins and allows you to be social? Extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors: Will a new job in a new place allow you to earn more money? Will it impress your friends and family? Will working out make you more attractive to others? By figuring out what motivates you, you can get a better sense of how to move forward.

Identifying a small, measurable goal can be helpful in this situation because then you can finally see your progress, which will in turn motivate you to keep going. If your goal is, for example, "get a job in a new state," you won't be able to 'succeed' until the very end of the process. It's all or nothing. Instead, try to find smaller goals such as "identify 5 places that meet the criteria of somewhere I could live, including affordable, job opportunities, and a social support system." After that goal is achieved, the next one could be "establish 3 professional connections in each of those 5 places." This can help you move towards your end goal and give you feedback along the way.

Although it is hard for you to imagine anything changing, remember that even your current negative experiences are providing you with information about what you don't want, which in the end will help you find your path. Best of luck to you.
