What to do when motivation is low at work?

It’s been another long day.  Gosh, it’s been another long week.  It seems like you are running a rat race you can’t win.  What do you do when the motivation is running low at work?

Come Prepared To Work

When you don’t want to be somewhere or feel like things aren’t going the best, it's easy to try to do things like slip in late or leave early.  However, these types of things don’t boost your motivation.  Instead, try making yourself more prepared for work.  Arrive on time, dressed sharply, and with a list of tasks for what to do for the day that you prepared the day before.

Encourage Yourself And Others At Work

When you complete a big task, find a way to reward yourself.  Congratulate your co-workers on their successes.  Thank colleagues for teamwork and for behaviors/attitudes that you appreciate.  This encourages these actions to reoccur.  Try changing your scenery when you find yourself getting bored or things seeming like they are on a loop.  What is your office’s flexibility for working at home?  Could you take your computer outside for an hour or take a call while you are on a walk?

Remember Your Purpose And Power

Recall the reason you began your career in the first place.  What drove you to be a (insert title) here in the first place?  Are you achieving those things now?  If not, create a plan for how to achieve those goals and a timeline.  If your dreams have changed, how might you go about achieving your new dreams for yourself?

You are the only person that has the power to choose your life path.  If your life path includes dreams of being an airline pilot, you must take the first steps to train as a pilot.  Should you want to be a carpenter, you must be the one to pick up the tools.  However, you also must seek the resources to achieve your dreams.  To get more resources and learn more about motivation, speak to a counselor today.  Many counselors are trained in career counseling.  Career counseling is a type of advice-giving and support provided by trained counselors to help clients manage their journey through life, learning, and work changes.
