Which Careers Need the Most Education?

When it comes to choosing a career there are two things people usually look at. One is how much money will I make and two, how much education or training will it require. While the majority of jobs will vary on education and experience needed, there are seven career choices that require an extensive amount of education and training.

If you want to be a physician or a surgeon be prepared to spend eight years in college. You will attend four years of undergrad and another four years in medical school before starting your residency, which can last anywhere between three to seven years. They also will need to obtain a medical license. The payoff for all of that education is an average salary of around 200,000 a year. The projected job growth for this profession in the next seven years is 7%.

Veterinarians come in second place for most education needed for a career. You will need to complete a four-year undergraduate degree and then will have to attend another four years at a veterinarian school to become a doctor of veterinary medicine.  You also will have to have a medical license to practice. The average salary is around 94,000 dollars a year and has an 18% growth rate in the next seven years.

Postsecondary teachers are number three on this list. Most college professors are required to have a Ph.D. and field experience in order to teach. Some smaller universities or community colleges may only require a master’s degree. Most college professors make around 78,000 a year and there is an 11% growth rate projected in this field.

Number four is an astronomer or physicist. This will require a Ph.D. in order to do field research or if you want to teach that subject in a university setting. There are a few entry-level positions that only require a four-year degree. On average, people in this field make around 120,00 dollars a year, and there is a small growth outlook of only 9%.

Computer and Information Research Scientists is number five. While there are some job openings in this area you can get with a Bachelor's degree, most jobs in this area will require a master’s degree. There is a 16% growth rate in this field and an average salary of 118,000 dollars a year.

Number six is political scientists. To work in this field, you will need at least a master’s degree in political science or a related field, but some jobs may require a Ph.D. The average salary is around 115,000 and it has a small growth rate of only 5%.

The last job listed is a mathematician or statistician. If you want to work in a private industry you will most likely need a master’s degree or Ph.D. Most jobs in this career you can obtain with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
