Why Career Planning Is Important?

Career planning is important for a variety of reasons. Most people want to have a successful career, something that they spent time and effort creating and developing. After all, most of us spend most of our time working than doing any other activity during the week. Successful career planning does require a certain amount of effort though.

The first question anyone has to ask themselves is this: Is this the right career for me? Many people select a career for the wrong reasons. One common reason is for material gain only. People who enter a career for this reason often find themselves burning out after a few years. There is nothing wrong with going into a certain profession for material gain but if this is your sole reason, you may find the job overly stressful and uninspiring.

Another way people often select a certain career is someone they know already does it. Perhaps your father is an accountant, or your mother is a teacher, so you decide to go into either one of those fields. Many people choose a career based on a family member already being in it, it is familiar and reassuring to them. So, they may end up enjoying such a career or discovering it is not for them eventually. Therefore, this does not always work out.    

However, the best path to take is learning about yourself; knowing your strengths and your vulnerabilities. If you struggle with the organization then a job that requires detailed bureaucratic work is probably not going to be a good fit for you. However, if you know you thrive under pressure perhaps a job in public safety or emergency medicine might be a perfect fit.

Knowing what abilities and skills you possess is also important. You can take those and leverage them into a career. Even if you lack a specific knowledge base, if you are interested in learning then you know which direction to head. You may have to learn some basics first in college or a specific training program but if you know you will enjoy the job, it will be worth it.   

Finally, when you achieve the type of career you want you should continue to learn and grow in that career. Ask for more responsibility and network with people where you work to learn from others, possibly find a mentor who can help you on your career path. You will find such a relationship rewarding.
