Motivation is often referred to as drive because it is what helps get us going.  Without motivation, people can get somewhat stagnant, depressed, anxious, and even stuck.  Motivation can help us to feel forward-moving rather than tied to the past.  For example, if someone is trying to lose weight and thinks about all of the times they have failed at losing weight, they will likely not have much motivation. However, if that person can focus on how the present is different and come up with new ways to instill motivation, they will feel forward moving.

Motivation is a component that can help so many facets of human life.  It can improve relationships, friendships, mental and physical health, careers, and many other things.  Motivation helps us to be alert and pay attention to those areas of our lives.  For example, if I am motivated in my career, I will more likely achieve my goals in that area of my life. The alternative would be to pay less attention to those areas, likely resulting in them suffering.  So remember that motivation, even in the form of stress, is necessary and can hopefully be welcomed.  Motivation also helps us feel in a more positive state because of the hormones associated with motivation.  Those hormones help us continue to move forward, which is why the opposite when we are stagnant involves somewhat of an absence of those hormones.

At a basic level, motivation gives us the drive to follow through with our day-to-day.  Basic daily activities, such as showering, brushing our teeth, getting dressed, and even eating, need some motivation to follow through with them. Without motivation, some people even struggle with surviving because motivation is that important.  Our own personal motivation not only impacts ourselves but others as well.  If we are unmotivated, those around us might worry or even become demotivated themselves.  On the other hand, if we are motivated, people can pick up on that and can benefit from that.  For example, if I am motivated to clean the home, the people I live with will reap the benefits of a clean home.
