can anyone have therapy?
Ann,
So glad you reached out with this question. In your question you asked if anyone can have therapy. The answer is a resounding yes, as long as a person is oriented to person, place and time, they are appropriate for therapy. Therapy can address many different components of an individuals life experience. Just because a person is unable to think of any trauma, does not mean they are not dealing with stress and some of the resulting struggles with depressed moods, anxiety, anger or frustration with relationship. There are always skills that can be learned to improve the life experience.
We all deal with life complications and/or frustrations and we can all learn new ways of being in the world that can help make life less stressful and open the way for more joy to be experienced.
In your question you stated that you struggle with stress and anger that you need / want to manage. Anger and stress can be related, so when you learn to deal with one it will impact the other. It can help to take some time to explore with an objective person the etiology or the foundation of beliefs and/or the situations that are fueling your stress and anger. It is also important to explore the behavior you have associated with your stress and anger.
All of your responses to the world around us have been learned and they can be adapted and sometimes even unlearned. In the process of exploration and evaluation of the stress / anger response, one can uncover many new options simply by discovering new perspectives and learning new skills. The process can reveal new choices and a feeling of freedom.
Therapy can help anyone. It is not the therapy alone that is important to the process. Practicing the skills and reviewing new ways of thinking is important. In therapy you get as much out of it as you are willing to put into it. You also need to be picky. The relationship you can develop with your therapist is also important. If a therapist is not a good fit for you, if it is not a person you feel you can trust - get a different therapist. One of the most influential components to success in therapy is the relationship you form with your therapist. You must be able to trust and relate to the person you are working with in therapy.
All this being said, is to say that yes anyone can participate in therapy and the therapeutic process. As you explore therapy as an option in your life remember therapy is all about you and meeting your needs. Best of luck and many blessings to you on your journey of healing and self discovery.
