Can body language lie?
Body language is a non-verbal form of communicating with others that differs from person to person. Like with any form of communication, it can be helpful to think about if someone is truthful with you or not. This brings up an important thing to think about, which is someone’s intent. Some people’s body language lies because they have not practiced certain mannerisms in the mirror and do not realize their body language is not matching what they actually mean. For example, if someone feels really comfortable and relaxed around someone while listening to them, but their body language is fidgety, the person talking could make the listener uncomfortable. The listener might not even realize that they are fidgeting and that it comes across that way.
Some people might intentionally lie with their body language to serve a certain purpose. Sometimes people do not want to let others in on what they feel, so they will use their body language to throw them off. For example, some people might smile in conversation they are actually really uncomfortable in because they do not want the other person to know that they are uncomfortable. Sometimes this kind of deception can be a really smart tactic. For example, if you are negotiating with a salesperson and want the salesman to think it is your final offer, you might convey confidence with your body language even though you are really feeling very nervous.
It is important to remember that body language differs from culture to culture. So you might think someone’s body language is untruthful when in reality, it is just a part of their culture. Body language can sometimes be harder to hide than words. Our feelings certainly impact our body language, which can make it harder to lie with non-verbal communication. Signs to look out for if someone is lying or not could be fidgety if they keep looking away, sweating, and doing other things. If you sense someone is lying with their body language, it can be best to call them out on it before accepting your suspicion as truth.
