Can insurance cover the cost of this therapy?

My parents don’t believe in mental health, they think it’s something a person has to get over by themselves. They have refused to let me get therapy for years now, but I can’t deal with all of my thoughts on my own anymore

What is listed below is from the BetterHelp site regarding if BetterHelp services would be covered by insurance. It appears as though. Generally, they are not. That said, you are always welcome to call your insurance company to ask if they would cover it. Perhaps due to COVID, they may have changed their policies, and each insurance company is different and has its own rules and regulations they need to follow.

Because you mentioned concerns regarding your parents, I also want to note that if you are a minor or under the care of a legal guardian, BetterHelp would not be able to provide services to you either as a parent or guardian would need to sign off or be involved in some way.

"Services offered using this site are generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.

Coverage and benefits for traditional therapy and counseling services change from one health insurance company to another and from plan to plan, but generally, the following rules apply:

  • With many health insurance plans, coverage can be partial or very limited.
  • Even if your plan covers all your costs, the co-pay you would be required to contribute may be higher than the cost of BetterHelp.
  • In many cases, before you can get reimbursed by your insurance company, your therapist must diagnose you with a mental disorder or issue. This diagnosis would be sent to the insurance company and recorded in your medical file. Sometimes, the therapist would also have to provide additional clinical information to the insurance company, such as treatment plans, summaries, or copies of the entire record.

If you are considering using your health insurance, please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
  • What is my deductible, and has it been met?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
  • Does BetterHelp take insurance?

Please note that BetterHelp offers very affordable pricing options which are typically comparable with the co-pays of most insurance plans.
