How can I become independent?

I'm 19 turning 20, and I feel as if I’m a failure, I can’t drive, don’t have a job, and still live with my parents. I get anxiety when I see things changing. I wish I could be a kid again and have no responsibilities.

Hello, this is a great question! I'm so glad you asked this.

I think the mixed emotions you are having are completely age appropriate. Change can be extremely scary. You are at that transitional youth age where you are crave freedom and independence, but you still want the comfort of what you know.

You are not alone, many people your age feel this way; they just may not be as brave as you and don't talk about it or admit it. I have felt this way, and I bet if you ask your folks, they will be able to share a time when they did also. I would start with small steps. Maybe make your own doctor appointments. You mentioned you don't drive, that's ok, are you within walking distance of anything? Maybe take a walk to the store to get personal items for yourself. Or maybe schedule an Uber and go get coffee at Starbucks. Do you work? Maybe look for a part time job that you enjoy and have fun with. My first job was at a movie theater, free movies, free popcorn, free soda! I'm a movie buff so I was in Heaven. What do you like to do? Find that PT job. Do you have a checking or savings account? Perhaps opening one and being the one who manages each account.

Lastly, are you close with your folks or older siblings? Talk to your family for support. Having support and people in your corner will help alleviate some anxiety. If not your folks, maybe a best friend you trust; you may even surprise yourself when your friend admits to the same feelings. There are no right or wrong answers, and there are no perfect one size fits all solutions to becoming independent. People are different, and our experiences and relationships play a role in what will work for each of us. Just find what might work for you and take baby steps. Don't be afraid to journal, make lists, or make notes about what you do want.

I hope this helps. I have all the confidence that you will find the best road to travel!
