How can I escape the fear of death
Hi there,
I hope you are well and thank you for your question. Fearing not being alive, following the death of a family member is not unusual. It sounds like escaping the fear of death is your goal here.
The first part of working towards this goal is to consider that it is normal to fear death because it is an unknown. It is also common that upon further exploration it is not "death" itself that we are scared of but aspects of it (leaving people behind, uncertainty or unknown, loss of control, potential ways we may die etc.). Facing our own mortality is tough! Ask yourself, what is it about not being alive that frightens you? This will help you to identify which bits of death you fear the most, helping you to learn what you are trying to escape from.
Although it is difficult right now, try to remember that:
- Death is a natural process - acceptance of this can help to alleviate some of the worries that come with thinking about death.
- Live in the present and enjoy each moment life brings - live life to the fullest and take advantage of all opportunities that present themselves to you so, when it comes time to face death, you know you have lived well.
- Make plans for your passing - so you know your wishes can be followed. It can help to be prepared and particularly, if your feelings are linked to a lack of control, it can be empowering to acknowledge what you can do.
I note that you talk about the loss of a family member being the trigger for the realization of your mortality and fears of not being alive. It is not unusual for us to acknowledge this following a family member's passing, this can be part of our own grieving process too. It can help to find ways to reflect on the life of the person who has passed away, if appropriate, perhaps consider ways you can honor their memory to support you in processing the grief of losing them.
I hope this helps but please get in touch if you would like further support.
Thanks
Kim
