How or where should I start to better myself and the way I want to live my life?

It sucks when one bad day or lazy day turns into longer than a week sometimes. Especially when mentally I know I should be productive, but I can’t find the energy to. Then I beat myself up and get sad for staying stagnant.

Hi Chelly,  Thank you for reaching out for help and support.  Low moods affect our thoughts and the narrative for how we approach our day.  Lack of motivation can occur when we experience stressors in life.  It is easy to become depressed, anxious and overwhelmed, making the smallest tasks difficult to tackle and achieve.

You are not alone dealing with this lack of energy and poor motivation.  Many people struggle with these issues.  There are steps you can take reenergize and motivate yourself.

Seek support from friends and family.  When we reach out, we realize and find people are in our corner and there to help guide us in the tough times.  Emotional and social connection will boost your mood and help you not isolate or feel alone.

Give yourself a break. You are human.  None of us are perfect.  There will be good days and bad days.  The bad days do not define you.

Take time for yourself.  Practice self care to relax and improve mood.

Journal to self reflect, identify thought patterns, and track your feelings and progress.

Practice Mindfulness and gratitudes.  This will improve focus and help keep you grounded in the present.

Create a routine.  This will help you establish priorities, reduce stress, decrease anxiety, and build habits.

Break large projects down into smaller tasks. You will feel a sense of accomplishment and complete the bigger projects faster than you realize or had planned.

Set small, achievable goals. This will help you to not get overwhelmed with large projects.

Reward yourself for the little steps you take.  Celebrate your progress to build confidence and improve self worth.

Try not to let setbacks deter you from moving forward.  Things happen, life will get in the way.  Don't punish yourself for not meeting a goal or finishing a task.

Seek therapy with a trained and experienced mental health counselor.  Through Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) you will learn to identify thought patterns, change irrational thoughts, and develop positive behaviors.  CBT will help motivate you as you get your goals back on the path you have set to improve your day to day health and mental well being.  CBT is a short term modality.  This means within a few sessions you will see improvement and make progress forward.
