Absolutely body language is real; however, how body language is perceived is in the eye of the beholder.  Now there are some general beliefs about language and what that entails.  For example, many believe that the way you walk and talk can portray your sense of confidence.  While others may pay attention to your eye contact as that could be telling if you are being truthful or not.  Some people study body language and have jobs/careers in understanding body language.  This is a form of non-verbal communication that pretty much everybody uses in some fashion or another.  Let’s look at some of the common ways in which body language sends a message.

  1. Gait: how you stand portrays confidence.  A strong/solid stance shows that you are confident, while someone fidgety indicates nervousness.
  2. Walking: The way we walk can tell a story; looking down and shuffling their feet while they walk shows they are shy, perhaps fearful.  While someone who can keep their head up and walk with defined strides shows, they are bold.
  3. Body posture: when you are talking with someone, your body is closed off; perhaps your arms are crossed.  This will show that you are turned off from the conversation, whereas open arms and wide eyes will show interest in open-mindedness to what you are hearing.  Head nodding will also demonstrate interest.
  4. Feet: is has been told that your feet point in the direction of interest, so if your feet are pointed away from someone you are talking to, this indicates that you want to exit the encounter with this person.
  5. Eye contact: as previously noted, the gaze of your eyes and send a message.  Droopy/tired eyes can indicate disinterest.  Or very intense gazing could indicate an aggressive/threatening gesture.

There's are just a few examples of ways to demonstrate that body language is very real and can be a form of communication.  As with verbal communication, sometimes our messages can be perceived incorrectly, so it is always important to be aware of how the other part interprets your body language.
