Is it possible to overcome my mental health issues by myself?

I'm struggling with impatience, reactive anger, and a relentless sense of self-awareness, self-analysis and self-criticism. I am skeptical about whether therapy can help me. I know how to be better, keep my mind healthier, but I'm standing in my own way.

Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch, and for your insightful question.

I think it's brave you've chosen to reach out, and it shows a vulnerability.

Firstly, therapy is about a facilitative, trusting relationship that you're able to explore your experiences, for example you said, you know 'how to be better' what does this mean, what's your impression of being 'better' and if you know how to, then what is the missing part? It sounds as though there is an experience of unhelpful thought patterns or thinking styles that may not be serving you know, but maybe have done at some point, that could mean that despite you understanding what you 'should' do, it still feels jarring, maybe this means that instead of thinking yourself through it, maybe feeling it might be beneficial- hence where the supportive relationship can help.

It may be worth considering, when you recognized these patterns of self analysis and criticism emerge, maybe that feels clear, or maybe you don't remember, but it's all useful information for self development and processing. It sounds tough when you use the word 'relentless', this speaks to me as though there is this ongoing story or voice for you that probably has a big impact on your life, it probably has felt important to be bound by this way of being, maybe it's kept you safe, or meant that you've achieved goals or been valuable in some way- what would it be like to not be driven by it? What's the alternative, what would you like instead? If your experience was different, how would that be, what would life be like?

There are a lot of points for consideration, and I would say your question promotes more questions that answers, as it's a big important self reflection step- do I want therapy?

Is it worth the risk to offer yourself the space for self exploration, and how might that pay off for you?

I hope this answer feels useful in some way, of course it's not cut and dry.

If you feel as though you'd like some therapy, feel free to connect with me, it would be at your own pace and of course you are in control, it's not a 'done to' process, it's a collaborative relationship.

Kind regards, Charlotte
