Why body language is important in the workplace?
Body language is important in many areas of our lives, especially true for the workplace. Positive body language can promote oneself in the workplace, help with networking and connections, help get promotions and/or new jobs, and help navigate any work drama, among other things. Conversely, negative body language could get in the way of getting a job, could damage co-worker relationships, communicate disrespect, get in the way of overall job performance, among other things. Respect is an important component to consider when you are thinking about your body language. Sometimes we do not mean to show disrespect through our body language, and it is important to rehearse in front of a mirror to make sure you are coming across like you want to. If you receive feedback that you are unprofessional in your body language, try to ask for specifics, so you have some specific things to practice in front of a mirror.
When considering your body language in the workplace, it will be important to think about what types of body language are professional and unprofessional. Professional body language can include proper posture and eye contact when interacting with co-workers, bosses, and customers. Also, coming across as focused and welcoming can be really helpful as well. For example, sitting still when listening to a co-worker and actively paraphrasing as you talk can show them that you care and want to listen. Nodding is also a great way of showing someone that you are listening and invested in what they are saying.
Unprofessional body language can definitely damage your reputation and interactions with co-workers. Some types of unprofessional body language to consider are being closed off and hardened, being fidgety, poor posture, a lack of eye contact, among other things. For example, if you are continually looking away when talking with a boss, that could make them think you are not listening and that you do not care. Keep in mind these types of body language so that you are coming across as professional and respectful.
