It is important for students to have the opportunity to plan their career paths. It gives them an advantage and a clear picture of what kind of education they may need, the skills needed for that career, and the overall cost to pursue that profession. It allows them to seek out interests, as well as aptitudes. Through this exploration, students can start making career goals in high school so when they graduate, they have a clear path to transition successfully.

Most high schools across the country have Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways that allow students the opportunity to seek out different career choices. By taking these classes in high school, it gives the students some ideas if they would like to choose this path as a long-term career or not. Most of these CTE classes come with industry certifications. So, for those students who are not wanting to go to college after high school, but want to join the workforce instead, this allows them to step into their career of choice with more experience and usually start off with a higher paying salary.

Many students earn college degrees; however, many end up not using their degree and end up in a new career choice. By career planning, allows students to be sure they pick the best career based on not only their interests but their aptitudes. A lot of people pick career choices based on how much money they want to make, but that does not always lead them to a satisfying career, nor does it mean they have the skills to be successful in that career. By using career interest inventory tests, along with tests that look at your aptitude, you are more likely to pick careers that are more suited to your personality and use the skills that you already have.

There are many ways to plan for a career. The best way to see if you really going to like a career is by gaining real-world experience. These would include internships or taking classes that offer hands-on experience, so you can really understand what the day-to-day looks like in that career.
