Am I being emotionally manipulated in my relationship?

He’s so generous, thoughtful, full of surprises and has nice plans made for us when we meet. However he doesn’t understand when I am upset, he tells me to grow up and stop crying if ever I do and he can never admit when he’s wrong. It wouldn’t bother him if we didn’t meet for 3 weeks and when I get upset over this I’m told to relax and stop being so uptight

Bella,

Hello, it is nice to meet you! Thank you for taking the time to send in your question. You ask an excellent question. If you and I were working together in therapy, I would want to explore more about your background as well as your relationship with your partner. How long have you and he been together and how often do you currently see and speak to one another?

From what you have said, it sounds like he likes to be in control of the relationship and wants to determine when and how often you see one another. It does not sound like he is validating your feelings or concerns. That cannot feel good for you. It feels very minimizing of your feelings. Makes you feel that there is something wrong with you. I hear characteristics of gaslighting, based off of what you have described. Please remember, you do have a right to tell him how you are feeling. He does not have to like or agree with what you say, but you should be allowed to say how you are feeling in a relationship, even if the other person does not agree with you.

One other thing that is very significant is the very fact that you are asking this question. You suspect something does not feel right, even referring to this as emotional manipulation. I would encourage you to trust your intuition and gut feeling. You know yourself better than anyone else. Maintain your boundaries with him and let him know when you are upset or feel hurt. If he has difficulties with admitting to ever being wrong, that puts you in a position of having to defend yourself and always feel that you are wrong. Also, I would recommend using I statements. Such as, "I feel hurt when this happens, etc". Try not to say things like, "you do this, you do that, etc" Using you statements will frequently make the other person feel defensive and judged. That is not your intention, you are simply trying to express your feelings.

I hope that you have found this information helpful and I wish you all the best moving forward on your journey.
