As it stands, dating apps and dating sites are becoming the “norm” of how we navigate dating in modern society. Between the technology boom and the recent global pandemic, dating sites are probably the most popular that they have ever been! For some, dating sites have created a more comfortable dating experience with a less intense approach to meeting new people. Still, others have experienced an onslaught of negative interactions while on dating sites.

In figuring if dating sites are right for you, it is important to weigh a few of the more common pros and cons that come with using a dating site. One pro of using dating sites is that it creates a more relaxed approach to meeting new people or potential romantic partners for introverted people. Dating sites can make a person feel more comfortable since the initial interactions are occurring in the comfort of their living space rather than a noisy and crowded bar, club, or restaurant. Another great feature that dating sites have is that some of them allow people to “filter” what they perceive as “deal breakers” or possible wants in a partner.

Dating sites can also provide a larger dating pool for folks in different situations that might make it more difficult to connect with potential romantic partners such as people in rural areas or folks within the LGBTQIA+ community. Furthermore, even if someone is not looking for anything serious, dating sites can often serve as a confidence booster or a source of validation around one’s own attractiveness and ability to connect with others. Sometimes, this booster can be what a person needs to feel secure in seeking “in-person” connections.

However, there are possible cons to investing time into a dating site. Dating sites are not always safe and secure. Less secure dating sites don’t always verify a person’s profile leading to such things as Catfishing (someone pretending to be someone they are not on the internet oftentimes using another person’s pictures) or predatory behaviors. Dating sites can also place a lot of emphasis on appearances alone. Many dating sites use the “swipe right/swipe left” approach which relies heavily on people’s first impressions of a person’s looks alone. Furthermore, just by knowing what a person looks like and having data on them that has been compiled into their dating profile, does not leave a lot of room to “feel out” the person. Sometimes, certain types of physical chemistry or even gut feelings about a person need to happen in real life in order to assess whether or not the situation feels “right” or safe. A dating site can’t always provide this.

At the end of the day, a dating site can be worth it. They can lead to new connections and even a future romance. But, there is a way to go about navigating them in a smart and safe way that will create a more positive experience and, hopefully, help someone avoid some of the negative situations they can create as well.
