I believe that relationships can cover cheating if both people in the relationship are invested and proactive about making the relationship work. Cheating is definitely something that can ruin any relationship, but it is not necessarily the end of a relationship. The first step in recovering from cheating in a relationship is to have an open and honest conversation about the cheating.

Honesty and Openness

This involves partners sharing their feelings, perspectives, and reasons on why the infidelity might have occurred. This is important because it plays into the next part of the recovery process, building back trust. It is hard for people to develop trust after cheating because they have not fully processed why the cheating occurred. This includes speaking about the affair/cheating details if there is a need to do so on either side. It is a very difficult conversation to have, but I feel like it can help both parties understand each other better and how the cheating affected them.

Rebuilding Trust

The most difficult part in recovering from cheating is the rebuilding of trust. Trust is something that relationships are founded on, and without it, they cannot succeed. When someone cheats, naturally, there is a loss of trust that occurs within the relationship. That trust must be rebuilt on both sides. The person who cheats works on showing their partner that they can be trusted again through both words and actions. Meanwhile, the person who has been cheated on works on trusting their partner again and believing in their ability to prioritize the relationship.

Moving forward

The last part of recovering from cheating is processing the cheating and moving forward in the relationship. This does not mean to forget the cheating or affair that happened, but to be able to recognize it and not use it as leverage or blackmail against either partner. Examining cheating as something to work on and improve upon is an important step in building a stronger relationship.

Ultimately, cheating is something very difficult to recover from personal and in relationships. To me, it is a multi-step process that involves work on both sides of the relationship. It is doable if both people in the relationship are active and engaged in maintaining honesty, respect, and accountability during the process.
